Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (emdr)

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapeutic approach that is used to relieve post-traumatic stress and anxieties and to strengthen feelings of calm and confidence. Through the use of back and forth eye movements, and/or alternating hand taps and auditory tones, the right and left hemispheres of the brain are alternatively stimulated while reviewing an upsetting memory.  This process results in a reduction of the activation that this memory causes (desensitization) and allows the memory to be viewed in a way that is useful to personal growth (reprocessing).

EMDR provides an opportunity to discharge the overwhelming emotions and bodily sensations that go along with painful memories.  In addition, negative beliefs about the self that are connected to the memories are able to be discarded and transformed into positive and empowering beliefs.

At CCRH Roseann Martarano is an EMDR certified practitioner and utilizes the modality to help clients with trauma histories. If you are interested in EMDR feel free to reach out to learn more.
